YA Dystopian author Susanne Valenti tagged all of her blog readers to write a post using the Unpopular Books tag. I love tags- I think they’re fun, bring together the blogging community, and keep a conversation going. Let’s get to it!
1. A popular book or series that you didn’t like.
Anything by Charles Dickens… I just can’t with him. I can accept the argument that his writings are important and spurred a movement that brought about social change (which I can agree with) but I just don’t enjoy his novels… From YA books, definitely Cassandra Clare’s The Infernal Devices series.
2. A popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love.
The Jane Austen Book Club. I’ve heard that book labelled as everything from “cloying” to “pathetic.” I love it and wonder if they read the same book I did… I also noticed that it has a 3.04 rating on Goodreads. So sad!
3. A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with (warn about spoilers) or an OTP that you don’t like.
I’ve never been able to understand how Ginny Weasley ended up with Harry Potter… That’s all I’ll say about that.
4. A popular book genre that you hardly ever reach for.
Realistic fiction or romance. I prefer fantasy or historical fiction.
5. A popular or beloved character that you do not like.
Emma from Jane Austen’s Emma… Or Fanny Price from Austen’s Mansfield Park. For a more contemporary reference, Cath from Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Her intentional anti-social nature bothered me so much. While I could understand Cath’s reserved/shy nature, I couldn’t use that to justify her intentional anti-social actions. She rejected the kind gestures of everyone who was trying to be her friend at college and that just made no sense to me…
6. A popular author that you can’t seem to get into.
Andrew Smith.
7. A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing. (Examples “lost princess” “corrupt ruler” “love triangle” etc.)
Definitely the love triangle, insta-love, and overly perfect romances.
8. A popular series that you have no interest in reading.
Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver series. It’s basically Twilight, but with only werewolves. Not something that I’m interested in reading.
Also, the rest of John Green’s novels. I have only read The Fault in Our Stars, and while I really enjoyed it, I’m not really into his whole “thing” as an author.
9. The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie or TV show adaptation” but what movie or TV show adaptation do you prefer to the book?
I really love The Count of Monte Cristo movie (2002 version with Jim Caviezel). I’m a sucker for period pieces and a good “rise from the ashes” story. Plus, the set, costumes, food, and everything about that movie is beautiful. Case in point:

I love the Count of Monte Cristo movie for what it is as a movie, not for it’s adaption from the book. The book can never be made into one single movie, but Hollywood did a good job with changing up the plot, which I’m fine with.

I hear you! I will also say that I was 12 when the movie came out and therefore hadn’t read the (massive) book before I saw the movie, so I think that’s why the movie is more dear to my heart. But you’re right- I think the movie is a great summation of the novel, despite the many changes that were made in production. Thanks for your comment!
